Little Fish Eat Big Fish (LFEBF) is a group of independent filmmakers from West Bengal, India. It was formed in December, 2008 by a few young artists living around Kolkata who believe that they could give expression to creativity and experiment with the art of cinema without seeking financial help from mainstream producers. It is an established platform for independent no-budget filmmakers from Bengal that promotes alternate films in the Bengali language, and thoughts on & about Bengali Cinema.
The forum was founded by Anamitra Roy, Arupratan Ghosh and Sriparna Dey. Their first film was titled Mrito Kanchaner Lobhey (In Search Of Dead Gold), written and directed by Arupratan Ghosh. Crime and Punishment was the second film released under the banner of LFEBF, in 2009, which was written and directed by Sankha Subhra Ganguly.
In 2010, the forum undertook its third and most ambitious venture by bringing out a DVD named ‘Five No Budget Films’ which consists of five short films namely, The Sandbook, Jean Luc Godard Had No Script, A Hiding, Or A Horror Story and Long Live (all) The Revolution.
The DVD was sold via unconventional and non-commercial distribution methods and circulation was widespread. They also released their films on the internet via Zinemaya.
The forum had more than twenty members by the end of 2010, and was rapidly evolving into a self-sustained organization of filmmakers who acted in or edited each other’s films to cut down costs. The people involved included the founder members and Kamal Kumar Roy, Abhishek Bhattacharya, Snigdhendu Bhattacharya, Ananda Das, Pratik Mandal, Yovik Chattopadhyay, Sumit Dey, Souva Chattopadhyay, Arkapratim Mukhopadhyay, Mainak Pal, Puja Ghosh and Sankha Subho Ganguly.
In 2011, LFEBF released their second compilation named Season Two: No Budget Film. The films featured on it were Ballads Of The Spring, Memories, Two Or Three Things About Visuals, and Secret Footage. The last title was more than an hour long with two segments The Encounter and The Voyage written and directed by Snigdhendu Bhattacharya and Anamitra Roy respectively.
In 2012, 3rd Compilation: No Budget Films was released at Kolkata with the films: Mr Director, Sunday AtGaliff Street, Replica, Memories Of A Dead Township and City.
The circulation has increased to twice the number in the three years, and the forum is expanding itself by distributing DVDs to local retailers in all the districts and important towns of West Bengal.
